![]() Modern hard drives only need one pass and no one has produced any evidence that data can still be read because on modern hard drives the data density is just too high. Some standards say you have to overwrite the data 5 to 7 times but that is based on very ancient evidence on very low capacity storage devices. Wiping them by writing zeros and random data to them multiple times is very slow and it may still leave data on the reserve parts that the hard drive has stopped using. ![]() The chisel method takes less than 1 minute per hard drive having gathered the tools. If you worried that will not be enough take out platters and shatter them into small bits. 3 holes through the casing and platters will make them unreadable. Do you want to use the hard drives afterwards? If not physically destroy them with an old sharp wood chisel and hammer.
